The camp is easy to find from Kasese town. It is located 25km from the town center. Transport is either by private car, bodaboda or special hire taxi. From Kasese town, drive 10km on the Kasese- Fort-portal road up to Nkenda electrical terminal with may electrical poles. Nkenda electric terminal is locally called Kisanyarazi. Here you will branch west on Nkenda-Nyakalengijo road. This is the road that heads to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate. Rwenzori Heritage walk.

This mountain excursion is an exploration of the true cultural heritage of the Rwenzori Mountains that has never been disclosed before. You will witness the story of traditional Iron-rock mines. Here you will learn how the local tribes turned rocks into usable tools and weapons before the invention of modern implements. The excursion involves riding on boda-boda and trekking while participating with the locals. It takes you to the traditional mining village, on farms, at homes, or during varied local life settings. At “Buthale” hill, guests are taught how to find the iron rocks around the village farms. The elder will tell you how these stones were turned into iron as it was done in the year 500AD.

Forest walk

You will walk the hills, take the scenery, and meet the people of Rwenzori during this impressive forest trek. The trek involved walking both on the open scenic hills and in an indigenous forest bordering Rwenzori mountains national park. With a local guide, you will be looking for the unique birds and plants, chimps and other primates.  When you arrive at “Kyanzabiri” twin falls, spend time gazing this local river endlessly pumping into the pools. You can access Nyamughasana village by road, from Fort portal Mpondwe road. It is located 28km from Queen Elizabeth national park.

From Queen Elizabeth, turn right at Kikorongo, off Kasese Mbarara road and take Mpondwe road. Drive up to Kiburara junction and turn right then drive for 15.2km to Kiswahiri roundabout, past Kagando hospital. Take a right turn at Kiswahili round-about and head to Kyarumba town council where the office is located, on the left before crossing the main bridge.

 

This is probably the best Rwenzori trekking experience that incorporates nature and culture. On this trip, you will be hosted by the farmers and other indigenous families that live in the foothills of Rwenzori mountains. The trekking is organised by Buhuhira farmers’ cooperative, a local initiative in the village next to Rwenzori mountains national park.  This community is situated on the trail head of Kithoma gate to Bukurungu trail. Blue star homestay is located in a village setting of Sipi falls, in the foothills of Mount Elgon National park. It is a family of four, a couple with two kids. The home offers three rooms with a capacity of three beds a night. The family has a small backyard farm with goat’s cows and chicken. The crops grown include bananas, vegetables and coffee from which you will be shown how to farm, harvest, and roast to prepare the coffee drink. From the farm, the family makes own coffee so that guests can be treated to a fresh organic cup of coffee any time.

Sipi water falls tour doesn’t require any special arrangement. The area has experienced local guides who are readily available to guide. it is possible to do the walk alone or in small groups without any hustle. Only local guides are allowed to take the tourist. This means, if you come with your safari guide who are not resident in Sipi, they will have to hand over to the local guide to take you to the water falls. The water falls walk is conducted in two levels with different prices. The first level is the short walk. On the short walk, guests go to the first water fall and return to the hotel. On the second level, also called the long walk,  guests go to all the three water falls.  From the local guides, an appropriate orientation and packing will be required for each of the levels. All the logistics can be easily arranged by most travel agents, tour guides or independent travelers without a problem. On request, we can arrange the walk for any guest at no extra charges.

Sipi is a popular destination that in eastern Uganda. All hotels in this part of the country are able to provide information on how to travel there. Beside the water falls walk, sipi has allot of activities to participate in. Coffee is a local drink here and you will be offered a cup of fresh coffee all the time and in every home. Every family farms, roasts and brews their own coffee drink and you may choose to participate in the coffee making experience with the local family. You also have a chance to participate in a detailed village tour to experience the local life through the cultural dance performances or visiting the local homestead where you can join the family groups around pots of “ajono”, the local drink, in the evenings.

Mgahinga Community campground is located at the gate of Mgahinga Gorilla national park. The campground belongs to the local community under the umbrella Mgahinga community development organisation (MCDO). The generated income and benefits is channeled for the development of the community living near the park.

Rwenjeru community campsite is located near Lake Mburo National park, on the road to Katengyeto gate. It is a community of cattle keepers and their livelihoods rotate around cows with little supplementary farming income. the common cows are the traditional Ankole long horned cattle and the cows here are given names like any other members of the family. During the visit to Rwenjeru community, the local guide will take you on a cattle keeping tour showing you how they tend to their cows; giving them water, singing for them, setting fire for them or  calling each one of them by name.
