Overview

You will be spending time with the gorillas in their natural habitat to live their life for one hour. Day 2 – Entebbe – Kampala: After breakfast, we transfer to Kampala as you get introduced to social and cultural heritage. In we will participate in a full day boda-boda tour.  Highlights of the city tour include religious, social, political and cultural background of Uganda. the tour  will go to; Namirembe Cathedral, Owino and Nakasero markets, Lubiri Palace, Rugaga Cathedral, Gadaffi Mosque, Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, Bahai Temple, Amin’s torture chamber, Buganda’s kingdom parliament. Day 3 – Kampala  to Jinja: After breakfast, transfer to jinja to visit the source of the Nile; gardens with Mahatma Gandhi Monument, taking a boat cruise on the Nile, Speke Monument, war cemetery and Owen Falls dam.
Optional; Time allowing in the afternoon, we will be driving along the Nile to see the water falls and rapids towards the former Bujagali. Do a three hour bike tour and a stop by the Kilombera weavers to share the fabric weaving experience. Holland Park BB

Day 4 – Jinja to Kumi: Early breakfast and drive to Kumi to visit Nyero rock paintings. Check in the hotel and proceed to nyero rocks. After spending time at the rock painting, explore the surrounding landscape with a local guide to visit historical and cultural attractions of this area. Day 5 – Sipi: early morning transfer to Sipi area to participate in the water falls walk visiting the villages and caves taking the scenery and afterwards abseiling along the 100m high, Sipi falls. Day 6 – Sipi to Moroto: After an early breakfast, we drive from sipi to Moroto, this afternoon. We will hike Mt Moroto to visit Tepeth tribe communities of mount moroto & get exposed to the scenery the area has to offer. Karatunga guesthouse

Day 7 – Moroto to Kotido: After breakfast we visit to the Bokora and Matheniko Communities on the way to Kotido with packed lunch. We will then take a midmorning, drive to Kotido District. In the afternoon, we visit the Wednesday cattle market, the largest Manyata (village) in East Africa and the Kalokuruk sliding Rock. Day 8 – Kotido to Kidepo: After breakfast, take an excursion to the Ik community and then a short hike towards the summit of Mt. Morungole. On return, drive to kidepo savanna lodge in the afternoon Kidepo Savannah Lodge FB

Day 9 – Kidepo: After an early breakfast, take a morning Game Drive via Narus valley, Rionomde rock and Kanangorok hot spring. In the afternoon, take the evening game drive looking for more wildlife including the cats, ostrich, herds of buffalos and others. Kidepo Savannah Lodge or buffalo base FB

Day 10 – Kidepo to Murchison falls: We will take an early breakfast and start the drive to Murchison Falls as we explore the visible cultural artifacts and ways of life in the rural Uganda. Day 11 – Murchison: We will take an early breakfast at 6:30am then head to the morning game drive on the northern bank of river Nile (including Belugi circuit & queen’s track, hippo point) visit Nyamisika Cliffs. Game in this area includes Giraffe, Elephant, Harte beest, Lion, Uganda Kob, Oribi and a variety of savannah and woodland birds. Day 12 – Murchison to Ziwa and Hoima: Very early drive to Ziwa (with a quick stop at Karuma Falls) to make sure to arrive between 8h & 10h. We will arrive in Ziwa to a rhino tracking experience tour, an experience that takes around 2 hours. After the tour, take lunch at Kabalega diner before driving to Hoima where we will have an option of visiting the historical/ royal sites of Bunyoro kingdom; (Mparo tombs & Karuzika palace) on our way to the hotel for dinner and overnight Kontiki hotel FB

Day 13 – Hoima to crater lakes area: After an early breakfast, transfer to the crater lakes areas near kibale national park via Fort Portal.  Arrive to lunch and take a relaxed crater lakes tour then retire to dinner and overnight. Isunga Lodge FB

Day 14 – Crater lakes / Kyambura escarpment: Early morning, participate in the vanilla tour. After the tour grab packed lunch in Fort portal, transfer to Kyambura escarpment area, near Queen Elizabeth national park. We will stop at Rubona basket weaver for natural dye making experience. After our packed lunch at Rubona, head to Kyambura escarpment stopping at the equator in queen Elizabeth national park and check in at our lodge located close to kyambura viewpoint. If time allows, this evening, we will have a short excursion to Kataara Women’s Poverty Alleviation Group and return to dinner and overnight Twin Lakes Safari FB

Day 15 – Kalinzu forest: Early morning transfer to Kalinzu forest for Chimp tracking. After chimp tracking, return to lunch and then visit Lake Katwe for a traditional salt mining tour and the salt lake community experiences before retiring to dinner and overnight. Day 16 – Queen Elizabeth National park: Early morning breakfast at 6:30am then proceed to the game drive on the Kaseny plains, Janet track, Kaguta track and other tracks basing on the distribution of wildlife on the day. After the game drive, retire to lunch before we do the Kazinga channel boat cruise on Kazinga channel to see herds of Buffalo, Hippo and other animals at the edge of the channel as they cool off. Depending on the season European migrant birds like the terns and gulls congregate here in large flocks. Day 17 – Ishasha: Early morning drive to Ishasha sector, in time for game drive to look for tree climbing lions. Option for another game drive in the afternoon or visit river Ntungwe with chances of viewing the fishing eagle in action (fishing)and Kameme Village to learn the local life, before dinner and overnight. Day 18 – Ishasha to Bwindi: Drive to Bwindi Rushaga sector it is a relatively long and hilly drive. We will have several stopovers as we take the views and appreciating the local life (nature, social and cultural heritage) of the Bakiga and Bafumbira people living around Bwindi and Mghinga national parks. Day 19 – Gorilla tracking in Bwindi: Basing on the availability of gorilla tickets, we shall drive the one of the gorilla tracking starting points. The 17 days safari covers five national park, two wildlife reserve and several cultural hotspots of Uganda. The trip starts from the capital Kampala (central) to Kidepo (north eastern border) and then to Bwindi impenetrable forest (south western border). The trip also leads to rarely visited places like Budongo forest home to chimps and Ziwa rhino and wildlife sanctuary. The only place you can find rhinos in the wild while in Uganda. This trip further exposes the traveler to the ethnic groups of Uganda alongside their neighboring natural heritage. You will be able to meet some of the least known remote tribes of Uganda with chances of participating in their authentic experiences. These tribes include the Ik tribe on Mount Morungule in Kidepo Valley national park, the Bakonzo tribe in Rwenzori Mountains of the moon and the Batwa living with the gorillas in Bwindi forest.  At Lake Bunyonyi you will have a relaxed climax to this trip before you can return to Kampala flying with the scenic views of Kigezi region.

Day 1: Kampala – Ziwa Rhino and wildlife sanctuary: Early morning, after breakfast, start the journey to Ziwa Rhino and wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is the only place you will find Rhinos in their natural habitat while in Uganda. The sanctuary was created to reintroduce the Rhinos after all were poached may years back. On arrival at the sanctuary embark on the rhino tracking experience that will take about 2 hours. Optional activities include the shoebill canoe trek and other nature walks. You will spend the first night here.

Day 2: Drive from Ziwa Sanctuary to Kitgum: From Ziwa continue your drive towards Kidepo valley national park, spending the second night at Kitgum.  In today’s journey, you will cross the Nile at Karuma falls then drive north through the relatively flat and remote Ugandan countryside. You will have several stop over points for snacks. As you travel. You will observe the changing lifestyles and architecture while you cross the different ethnic territories of Uganda. Preferably, carry some packed snacks to minimize relying on roadside eats. You may stop to grab cooked snacks or stop for lunch at Gulu town then proceed to Kitgum for dinner and overnight. Please note that no pictures allowed at Karuma falls bridge but the panoramic views of the Nile are worthwhile.

Day 3: Kitgum – Kidepo valley National park: After breakfast, head to Karenga, on your way to Lokumoit Gate as your entry to Kidepo valley national park.  Today, as you head to the park offices and after checking in, you will take the chances of spotting wildlife in this rich ecosystem. Common site is the breath taking scenery of the landscape and wildlife including cats, African Elephants, Leopard, Bush bucks, Giraffes, African Buffaloes and much more. On a lucky day, you may spot the lions typical of Kidepo on the rocks at the entrance of Apoka park headquarters or along the Narus valley.

Day 4: Kidepo valley national park: Today you have a full day of exploring Kidepo Valley National park in a series of activities including game drives, nature and cultural walks, hot springs visits mixed with relaxing moments to enjoy the unique scenery of Kidepo landscape. Start with an early morning breakfast and packed lunch before you start the game drives and walks to the hot springs via the palm trees lined along Kidepo River, in search for Ostriches and leopards, tortoises along the way. You may choose to participate in the guided nature walk, mountain trekking to visit the Ik tribe chiefdom to participate in their dances and other cultural activities. You will then return to your hotel later in the day.

Day 5: Kidepo national park – Gulu: After breakfast connect from Kidepo valley national park to Kitgum through Karenga. You will then have lunch in Kitgum before you continue to Gulu town.  When in Gulu, You may participate in some cultural experiences to take a glimpse of the memories and remains of the Lord’s resistance army (LRA) war. You will be amazed to learn how this town has recovered to overturn the recorded story of horror. Being the largest town in the region, you will have chances to make refill shopping then return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Gulu – Murchison falls national park: Take an early breakfast and depart to Murchison falls national park. You will reach Murchison in the mid-morning and take a chance to do the game drive as you head to your accommodation at red chili hide way. This afternoon, you may join a boat cruise on the Nile for game viewing at a close range with options of taking a trek to the top of the falls. Please note that, taking the trek to the top of the falls requires that you have a car waiting for you at the top, to transfer you to the hotel.

Day 7: Murchison falls National park: After an early morning breakfast; embark on a half day game drive on the northern bank of the river Nile. Game in this area includes Giraffe, Elephant, Harte beest, Lion, Uganda Kob, Oribi and a variety of savannah and woodland birds. Return to the Lodge and have lunch. If you didn’t take the boat cruise yesterday, after lunch, is the best time for a boat cruise along the river Nile for game viewing at a close range. This is a paradise of the Hippo and Crocodiles. Retire for Dinner and overnight

Day 8: Murchison falls – Budongo – Boomu women’s campsite: Early morning, transfer to Kaniyo pabidi in Budongo central forest reserve to do the chimp tracking. After spending good time with the chimps in their natural habitat, head out of the park to Boomu camp for dinner and overnight. Other options to do in the forest include birding tours and forest walks.

Day 9: Boomu campsite – Rwenzori: After an early breakfast, transfer to Rwenzori Mountains national park. While at the Rwenzori Mountains of the moon, the community will take you through their life style in the hill. The journey to Rwenzori Mountains goes through Masindi – Hoima–fort portal road. From fort portal, you head south to Kasese, to the Rwenzori foothills Arrive at Ruboni community camp in time for Dinner.  

Day 10: Rwenzori: Wake up for early breakfast and head to one of the activities. Options include village walk. Forest walk or the community hill trek. You can choose to rest in the community as you meet the people while enjoying the local mountain setting.

Day 11: Rwenzori – Queen Elizabeth: After a relaxed breakfast, transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park. You may stop in Kasese to do refill shopping and lunch. You will arrive to a boat cruise on Kazinga channel to see herds of Buffalo, Hippo and other animals at the edge of the channel as they cool off. Depending on the season European migrant birds like the terns and gulls congregate here in large flocks. After the boat cruise, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Queen Elizabeth national park: After an early morning cup of tea at 6:30am, depart for a game drive on the northern parts of Queen Elizabeth national park, along the Kasenyi track. This is the best time for opportunities to view the cats in action. Later, return for breakfast. If you didn’t take the boat cruise yesterday, this is the best time for it. Optional activities include; participating in other wildlife safari activities or visit the Katwe traditional salt mining.

Day 13: Queen Elizabeth – Bwindi Impenetrable national park: After an early breakfast, transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the gorilla sanctuary through Ishasha sector. Since this route is inside the park, chances are you may spot some wildlife by the road. Common wildlife here include; elephants, baboons, antelopes, buffalos, birds and on a lucky day, some cats including the tree climbing lions.

Day 14: Bwindi Gorilla tracking: After breakfast take your picnic lunch and headt to the briefing point. After briefing by park rangers, embark on a 30 minutes – 8 hours trek to find the Mountain gorillas. The tracking starts at the area where the gorillas spent the previous day/night. On sighting gorillas, you will be allowed a full hour with them. You then retire for dinner and overnight. Optional: For the energetic and basing on the time left, there is a possibility of a village guided walk to participate in some of the local community experiences.

Day 15: Bwindi – Lake Bunyonyi: After breakfast this morning, you will be heading to Lake Bunyonyi. You will have lunch in in Kabale town then connect to the lake. Enjoy the relaxed boot ride to the island. You can opt for a local dugout canoe. On arrival, relax as you take the view of this hotspot gifted with the culture and some of the best views in the area.

Day 16: Lake Bunyonyi: Explore Lake Bunyonyi area. This morning, you will take a boat over this magical lake to the mainland to visit the Batwa community. After participating in their activities, giving them the gifts and spending good time together, you return for lunch at the island, Optional activities include; birding tour around the lake to discover the little birds (“Bunyonyi”) or participating in one of the tours on the lake. This day is an opportunity to learn how the lake Bunyonyi has influenced the culture and the way it affects the life of a people to make them some of the most innovative in Uganda.

Day 17: Lake Bunyonyi – Kampala: After the morning walk or a self-guided birding tour on the island you will come for breakfast as you take the photographic moment of the morning lake sunrise views. You will then head to Kampala via Kabale town. Arrive Mbarara town in time of lunch at Igongo cultural center. After lunch, head to Kampala with a possibility of stopping at the equator to buy some handicrafts and a coffee. Arrive Kampala in time of dinner and overnight in Kampala.

Day 1: Kigali, Rwanda: Arrive today and be picked up by our guide from the airport and transfer to your hotel in Kigali. Accommodation at 5 Swiss Hotel (BB)

Day 2: City Tour of Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park:  a late breakfast then spend the rest of the day, leisurely exploring Kigali. You will participate in the Kigali city tour on a two-wheeler (boda-boda) with local guides and a mini map to give you the feel of direction. Great site seeing, cultural encounters and mixing in the social life of Kigali with an option of going to the market, visiting the milk bar, Kigali arts, local food and gong to mount Kigali to take the views of the city – among others. This afternoon, at around 3:00pm, transfer to Volcanoes National park, the starting point for gorilla tracking. BB. Accommodation at peak spot Lodge (BB)                                        

Day 3: Gorilla Trek in Volcanoes National Park: This morning after very early breakfast and packed lunch, by 8am, the activity begins with a briefing from the park warden and there after entering the forest for the gorilla trek in Volcanoes park. Remember to carry with you bottled drinking water and to hire the services of the porter for assistance (optional). As usual, the tracking starts from the previous day location of the gorillas and may take you from one to eight hours to find them. Spend one hour with the gorillas and return by afternoon to the lodge for dinner and overnight

Optional: Taking a hike to the Dian Fossey grave site, tour to the twin lakes of Burera & Ruhondo, Cave tours in Musanze, bird watching and community ecotourism in Iby’Iwacu cultural village Accommodation at peak spot Lodge (BB).

Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking and transfer to Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: This morning after early breakfast, and with packed lunch, report to the briefing point of the golden monkey trek from the staff of Rwanda Development Board (RDB) before starting the trek. Carry with you drinking water. The activity is a half day excursion and you will return back to the lodge for lunch and check out.  After lunch, continue the drive up to Uganda crossing the border by afternoon, arrive at your destination for dinner and overnight in the neighborhoods of Lake Mutanda, a famous location with great views of the volcanoes and the Bwindi forest. Day 5: Gorilla Trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Bwindi – Gorilla tracking: Have an early morning breakfast and then report to the park headquarters for briefing about the dos and the don’ts during your Gorilla Tracking. With a ranger guide, you will trek for 1-8 hours through thick creepers and undergrowth with your guides to find the Gorillas, tracking starts from the point where the gorilla were the previous day. The steeply forested landscape is incredibly dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing you access. It is an extraordinary feeling being with these beautiful yet endangered creatures. After spending up to one hour with the gorillas, return for Dinner and overnight as previous night.

Day 6: Transfer to Kibale National Park: Early breakfast at the lodge transfer to Kibale National park in Uganda. The transfer takes you north via the beautiful spectacular scenery and the rolling hills of south western Uganda leading you to Queen Elizabeth national park though Kasese, a town once famous for copper in the 1950s. We shall spend a few hours exploring wildlife on the Kazinga channel in queen Elizabeth National park and then continue the journey through Kasese town. From Kasese you will be driving north along the Rwenzori Mountains with the views of the higher mountain peaks on the west (weather permitting). Day 7: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (Kibale National Park): This morning after very early breakfast / packed breakfast, by 6am, the activity begins with a briefing from the park warden and there after entering the forest for the habituation experience. Remember to carry with you the packed lunch, bottled drinking water and to hire the services of the porter for assistance. Day 8: Bigodi Primate Walk and Transfer to Entebbe for late flight at 11:30 PM: This morning with a local guide, you will participate in the Bigodi swamp walk looking for some of the 200 bird species, primates and other wildlife found here in a community sanctuary. After the swamp walk, continue to fort portal for lunch at garden restaurant. Fort portal town, is the most favorite town by travelers in Uganda and also home to the palace of the King of Toro located bellow the Rwenzori Mountain ranges. The journey to Entebbe will take you through the small homesteads, forested farms and towns like Mubende, Mityana until you reach Kampala then connect for one hour to Entebbe for the flight End of services (BB).

Tracking the chimpanzee in the jungle of Kibale National park, during this seven days trip is a rewarding experience. Meet the mountain gorillas in their home, Bwindi impenetrable national park. Explore this rich forest habitat as you seek the one gorilla family of choice. For up to one hour, you will observe the administrative and hierarchy behaviors of the entire gorilla group being headed by the silver-back. You will be observing how close they are to humans.

The number of mountain gorillas in the wild is now less than 880 on earth, in the three countries of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Bwindi impenetrable national park is home to over half of the worlds remaining Mountain gorillas in the wild.  Beside the gorillas, the forest boasts with other wildlife species such as 350 bird, 310 butter flies, 200 trees, 51 reptiles, 88 months and 120 mammals and a multitude of plant and insect life. Also, the neighboring tribes offer memorable cultural encounters of the Batwa, Bakiga and Bafumbira people. The Batwa culture experience tour gives you an opportunity to learn the forest skills such as honey harvesting, hunting, making fire from sticks, collecting water with bamboo etc.
