Description:

This 3-4 days trek takes you from Sipi at 1708 meters to Wagagai, the highest peak of Mount Elgon standing at 4321 meters above sea level on the oldest extinct volcano in east Africa at 24 million years of age. You will explore the mountain terrain to enjoy expanses of unique vegetation, breath taking scenery and caves. Common site is the lobelia Elgonensis, the everlasting flowers and many other eye catching flowers. Spot the colorful bird and insects unique to this habitat. In the forest zone, you may find some primates. Sitting on top of the mountain you will be rewarded with the view of the world’s largest and intact caldera. The trip takes four days of trekking plus the two days of transferring to and from the base camp. Day 1: Jinja – Mount Elgon: today, you arrive at the base of Mount Elgon.  Dinner and overnight at one of the following options based on availability: blue star homestay. Masai lodge or crow’s nest campsite.

Day 2: Sipi-Piswa Camp: After breakfast, with the 4wd car, you will transfer to kapkwata at 2190 meters above sea level, from where you will start your hike on the kapkwata trail. You will be exposed to a scenic route running through the bamboo, heather and moor land leading you to the piswa camp at 2850 meters, where you will have dinner and overnight camping.

Day 3: Piswa camp – Hunters cave Camp: Hike up to the edge of the caldera through beautiful pillars of the most unusual plant species including lobelia elgonensis. You will also find the wild everlasting flowers. Visit the hot springs and Suam gorge as you start to ascend to the hunters cave camp at 3850 meters. Dinner and overnight camping at hunters cave camp.

Day 4: Hunters cave Camp – Mude cave Camp: after breakfast, you ascend to the top of the caldera to the wagagai peak at 4321 meters. Descend thereafter through the jackson summit (4200 meter) and the Jackson pool to arrive at mude cave camp at 3500 meters. Dinner and camping at mude cave camp.

Day 5: Mude cave Camp – Kampala: Early morning, descend through the Sasa trail to Budadiri and then travel back to Mbale town. You will have lunch in Mbale and head to Kampala through Jinja or the next destination.

A trip to the legendary Mountains that is also the highest point in Uganda at 5.109 m. above sea level.  It is the next challenge to every adventure seeker that is none comparable to any Mountain in Africa. Traversing all the five vegetation zones of Rwenzori Mountains in one journey. The mountain is a complete beauty all the way from the communities and the foothills. You will be entering through the local subsistence farming plots mixed with traditional homesteads in the peripheries of the forest. At a higher altitude, common site are the extensive bogs, great scenery of the glacier valleys, the glacial rivers with glittering falls, rapids and of course the beautiful fauna and flora with unique flowers and colorful birds, most of which are endemic to this mountain.

Day 1: Entebbe – Kampala: Today our guide will pick the clients from Entebbe airport. Passing by a lake side town of Entebbe and spend the night at forest cottages in Kampala. (1hr)

Day 2: Kampala – Kasese/ Ibanda gate1646m: You will be transferred to Rwenzori. The drive will take around 6 hours. Enroute lunch at Garden restaurant Fort portal. Dinner and overnight at Ruboni community camp.

Day 3: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba 2632 m: On the first trekking day, we start Rwenzori climbing. After a briefing with the local porters and guides you will trek from 1646 meters to Nyabitaba hut at 2632 m Dinner and overnight at the mountain camp. (5hrs)

Day 3: Nyabitaba-John math 3.414 m: On the second trekking day, Leave Nyabitaba and take the central circuit loop anticlockwise. The trail leads to the crossing point of rivers Mubuku and Bujuku. After a slippery and difficult path you will reach Nyamuleju hut at 3000 meters a simple shelter among rocks. It’s better to hike for other 3 hours and reach John Matte hut at 3414 meters and spend the night. (7 hrs)

Day 4: John Mathe – Bujuku 3962m: The third trekking day will lead you to Bujuku hut after 5 hours of hiking passing through the Bigo bog where there is an old shelter. Bujuku hut is located at 3962 meters near the Bujuku Lake in a valley among 3 mountains: Mt Stanley, Mt Baker and Mt Speke. (5hrs)

Day 5: From Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut, 4.540 m. From Bujuku Hut climb through moss draped groundsel vegetation, to Scott Elliot Pass, 4.372 m., between Mt. Baker and Stanley. Here you divert to Elena Hut, 4.540 m. for spending the night before climbing Mt. Stanley.

Day 6: From Elena Hut to margarita back to kitandara hut, 4.023 m. From Elena Hut you ascend the last tract of rock and ice which leads to Margherita Peak on Mt. Stanley, 5.109 m. Time to complete the climbing about 3 hours. The peak was first climbed by the Duke of Abruzzi at 9.30am on 18th June 1.906. After you descend to Upper Kitandara Lake and through thick mud to Lower Kitandara Lake where Kitandara Hut is located, 4.023 m. Time to complete the hike about 3 hours more. From Kitandara Hut you can proceed for climbing Mount Baker or Mount Luigi di Savoia and the peak Vittorio Sella. Enjoy the view of Mt. Luigi di Savoia.

Day 7: From Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut, 3.261 m. Some people consider the fifth trekking day as hard as the second! After crossing Fresh Field pass head for the new Guy Yeoman hut at 3261 meters. In case of fog or bad weather it could be hard to follow the trail and remember that the last part is full of bogs. Before Guy Yeoman hut there are other two shelters: Bujongolo and Kaijongo. Bujongolo is well known for having been the base camp of Luigi di Savoia, Duke of Abruzzi who conquered and fully explored the Rwenzori in 1906. (6hrs)

Day 8:Guyeoman – Nyabitaba 2632 m: The sixth trekking day is dedicated to descend to the camp of Nyabitaba. On the descent there are some tricky points since the terrain is often slippery and boggy. After Kichunchu rock the trail will become easier passing through bamboo forests interesting to many birdwatchers. (5-6 hrs)

Day 9:Nyabitaba – Base camp/ Nyakalengija: The seventh trekking day return to the Rwenzori National Park headquarters Ruboni community. After a well-earned rest with the entire trekking group, porters and guides, you go to Ruboni community camp for dinner and a night. (3hrs)

Day 10: Nyakalengija – Kampala: After breakfast, we head to Kampala for dinner and overnight at forest cottages. Optional, connection to the airport for your flight.

Difficult to pass in the past but easy today thanks to a bridge. After a slippery and difficult path you will reach Nyamuleju hut at 3000 meters a simple shelter among rocks. You will be visiting the ancestral people of Africa hidden in the foothills of Rwenzori mountains, the Mountains of the moon. On this trip we  take you through the hills of Rwenzori Mountains displaying the tribal skills of post hunters and gathers now adapting the sustainable living skills of crafts weaving, story telling, blacksmith and traditional healing. You will listen to the ancient Ethnic stories of marriage, hunting, wars in the hills and seat with the tribal leaders to make the hunting and household tools as they used to over 300 years ago. After Rwenzori, we show you the Queen Elizabeth National Park  and you will be able to witness the cats in action over the morning game drives or the big five and other wildlife including bird, cooling off along the Kazinga channel, as you take the boat cruise.  This package is given through our Five days four nights trip, starting from Entebbe international airport.

Details

Day 1: Entebbe – Ruboni Community Camp: Morning arrival at the airport pickup and we head to Western Uganda in the foothills or Rwenzori mountains. We shall drive via Kampala and take the fortportal Mubende route. Have lunch in fort portal town at garden restaurant before we can head to Ruboni community camp for overnight. Arrival in the late afternoon. The day trip will have occurrences of African markets, social life; forest patches settlements and small town on the roadside giving you some picture opportunities along the way. (7hrs)

Day 2: Ruboni Community Camp: The day opens you to the amazing African tribal people, their environment and culture. Enjoy the morning views of the magical Mountains of the moon. The society is welcoming; just get ready for the forthcoming nature exploration trip with the local community guide. You have options of a village walk, forest hike and or a hill climb trek. It is possible to do two or three if you’re in shape at the time. On return from the activity, participate in the tribal cooking skills. Following the local elder you will harvest, prepare, cook and serve the local dishes. Doing as much as any local person around you, with a great picture opportunity. You will realize you just made a traditional dish of the Bakonzo people.

Day 3: Ruboni community to Queen Elizabeth and back: Well fed with the night memories of the mountains tribe, you probably had a wonderful night covered by the sounds of the jungle. You are set to go and explore the game in Queen Elizabeth National park. Today, you will do the game drive, a boat cruise on the Kazinga channel and return to the camp after lunch. The day starts after a cup of tea and drive for about one hour to the entrance of Queen Elizabeth national park where the game drive begins. Without missing a great variety of birds in the park and on the channel, the common game here are the elephants, Uganda cobs, warthogs, buffalo, water bucks, crocodiles, hippopotamus, and if lucky the lion and leopard . You now have an option of a balloon safari, to be able to take the gorgeous panoramic tour of the park, at the equator.

Day 4: Ruboni – Kampala Entebbe: A relaxed breakfast and start for the Kampala drive at around 9:00am to have an early lunch in fort portal garden restaurant. Taking the Mubende road again, we shall arrive in Kampala and connect to the chosen hotel or airport for the flight.

Trekking through Kilembe southern gate gives one of the best views of the Rwenzori mountains scenery. The experience and hospitality of the staff on this trek give you the best trekking experience. This journey to margarita peak at 5019m, will take you through the five Rwenzori vegetation zones. From Kasese town, you will be driving the scenic mountain roads twisting on the hill sides as you get introduced to the Rwenzori mountain terrain.  By 9 am the team will be ready to set off for the climb. The latest time groups can start the trek is at 11:00am. From the base camp at 1450m the 2.5 km walk to the park gate (1727 m) is tough but worth it because of its scenery. At the gate you get orientation about the park and the forthcoming memorable trip.

Day 1: Base camp – Saine hut (1450m – 2596m). Today’s trek is mainly through the forest zone. You will already start finding luxuriant but unique vegetation that id home to Rwenzori unique wildlife. From under the canopy, you may get chances of spotting primates, birds, and other small mammals. Trekking a total of 8.6km, total altitude gain for today’s journey will be 1146m, on a 5 – 7 hour.

Day 2 Saine hut – Mutinda camp (3688m). This is another beautiful 4 – 5 hours trek (6.9 km). After breakfast, start the trek that takes you through the two vegetation zones; bamboo and heather zones. The day will start with a sudden climb and can sometimes be muddy. Common site will be unique plants with flowers, giant heather trees, Mountain Rivers and streams, Usnea lichen, mixed with mist in some areas. On the way, you will have options of having several breaks and some hot drinks. Total altitude gain being 1092m.  On arrival, you may choose to go on to Mutinda lookout with a breathtaking view at 3,925m

Day 3 Mutinda hut – Bugata camp (40100m). After a hearty breakfast, start the 4-5 hours trek (6.8 km). That will lead you to Bugata camp. Your journey starts with a beautiful welcome scenery of tussock grass, giant lobelia and everlasting flowers. Steadily climb up the namusangi valley to find a mix of stunning waterfalls and great views of Mutinda peaks, typical of Rwenzori landscape. Total altitude gain is 374m.

Day 4: Bugata camp – Hunwick’s  (Butawu camp) (3974m). Trek up a ridge on your way to Bamwnjara pass. If the day is clear, you get perfect views of the main peaks from here. Descending the valley, enjoy the view of the luxuriant vegetation which include; moss, Giant groundsel and lobelia along the bogs. It is also the known breading location for the Malachite Sunbird. Enjoy the view of great numbers of sunbirds from here as they feed on the flowers of the ginat lobelia. Atop the deep valley, you will have the best views of the trio peaks of Mt Stanley, Mt Baker, Weismanns. You will have the night here at Hunwick’s Camp. Today’s journey is 6.2km and a total altitude gain of 388 meters at 4450 on the top of Bamwanjara Pass before you slope down to Butawu camp.

Day 5: Butawu camp – Margarita camp (4485m). Take an early breakfast and you are set for the 4.2km trek giving you a total altitude gain of 511m. From Hunwick’s camp, you will be Following the footsteps of the Duke of Abruzzi in 1902, during the Historic first ascend to Margarita peak. You will pass by lake Kitandara in the valley bottom as you admire the stunning vegetation and the deep waters with a beautiful reflection of the surrounding. You will arrive at Margarita camp after a considerable climb upt scott lliot’s pass. This camp was chosen by the duke because of the enormous rocks located on the sides that shelter it from the strong winds.

Day 6:  Margarita camp – margarita peak (5109m) – Butawu camp (3974m). Today is the mighty day of trekking to the highest point in Uganda, Margarita peak at 5,109m. The day starts at 2:00am with an early breakfast and then start heading to Mt Stanley at 2:30am.  Climbing the to the peak can only end at 10:00am as the ultimate time to start descending due to interest of safety in relation to the current weather patterns. From the peak, descent to Butawu camp (Hunwick’s camp) at 3.874m. In total, today’s journey will be 11.2km and altitude gain of 624m. to prepare for this day, it is important to plan apropriately

Day 7: Butawu camp – Bugata camp (4062m). After breakfast in a 6.2km journey starting with a steep climb on Bamwanjara pass. Ahead of Oliviers pass at 4,505m, you will take the greatest views of the peaks and scott Elliott pass, covering a total distance of 3km. transverse bellow weismann’s peak and reach the convergence of river Nyamwamba. This river is a natural connection between Rwenzori and queen Elizabeth. It directly flows through Kasese town to Lake George and then to Edward through Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth national park. After crossing the confluence, you will be heading to Kiharo camp deep down the valley with intense vegetation. From oliviers pass, you can choose to climb Weismann’s peak (optional) to be rewarded with great views of Mt Stanley, Mt speke, Mt baker and margarita peak at the same time.

Day 8: Bugata camp – Base camp (1450mm). Today you will head to the base camp through Kiharo camp skipping one camp on this trail. The Distance Kiharo Camp to the park gate 12.2km and another 2.8km down to the base camp, using a total of 5-8 hours. The trail is generally downhill and dramatic as you take the beautiful views down the rift valley. You will get the best of cascading water falls, and moss covered rocks along the river, deep valleys and forests. on this trail, you will be following the reality of the explorer and geologist McConnell who tried to create this route in 1937 and failed, but only to be created by Rwenzori trekking services in the recent past, making one of the most picturesque trail on the Rwenzori. Trekking along rivers you may spot wild animals such as Duikers. Enjoy the rocks, water falls and then follow the narrow ridge. Take a rest in the rock shelter ahead. You will then reach the magnificent forest where you have chances of finding wildlife such as birds, primates, duikers and hyrax. A great experience and ending to a fantastic trek.

This 28km trail takes you through the exploration of a cross section of the scenic Rwenzori mountains. The trail is an alternative to longer trek that lead to the high peaks. On this three days two nights mahoma trip, you will traverses the lower slopes of the mountains finishing at Lake Mahoma where the trail joins the existing ‘Central Circuit’ trail to return to the park gate. The entire circuit can be completed in 1-2 nights, or parts of it can be done as a day hike.

During this trip, you will explore some of the 70 mammals and 217 birds that are found in Rwenzori that include 19 species that are endemics to the Albertine Rift, as well as some of the world’s rarest plants.
